THERAPY therapy

Individual Therapy

One-on-one meetings with a compassionate, nonjudgmental counselor who respects the importance of individual differences and backgrounds provides the opportunity to speak freely and discuss private, personal issues.  Students say they gain a wider perspective and develop more options for dealing with stressful situations and feelings.

We encourage you to come in for an initial appointment to talk about how counseling might be helpful and to discuss any questions you have about how counseling works.  Please check out our FAQ page.  Some students are helped in one visit; while others come to therapy for several weeks or months.  If you need longer therapy, we can help you make arrangements to see a therapist near campus.

Couples Therapy

If you are experiencing difficulties in your relationship or marriage, couples therapy is available as long as one of you is a Stony Brook student currently enrolled for at least 6 credits hours. Couples therapy can help you better understand how the difficulties in your relationship arise and what gets in the way of resolving them.

Your therapist will provide a nonjudgmental forum to explore both partners’ expectations and experiences, as well as help you to develop empathy for each other as you gain perspective on your usual ways of responding. When you call for your first appointment, you may ask the triage counselor for a couple’s intake appointment. There is no fee for couples therapy. Many couples find the brief therapy offered over the course of several weeks or months is sufficient.  When more time is required, we will refer you to another therapist near campus.
