Mission

The mission of the University Counseling Center (UCC) is to provide the psychological and psychiatric services that many students need in order to be able to join the university community and flourish academically and socially. Licensed and certified mental health professionals provide immediate help in emergencies and ongoing and sustaining relationships for Stony Brook students. We encourage new first-year and transfer students in particular, and all students whose difficulties could seriously compromise their ability to remain at the university to contact us as soon as problems arise. Prevention, outreach, education, training programs, and immediate consultation services for students, parents, faculty, and staff are equally important in facilitating the academic life, psychological health, and safety of the campus. The UCC is committed to affirming and respecting people of all backgrounds and to responding to each unique individual as he or she wishes to be understood.

The UCC's primary services include clinical assessment of students' needs, crisis intervention and emergency response, brief individual and couples psychotherapy, ongoing group therapy, support groups, psychiatric consultation and treatment, and referrals for long-term and specialized treatment. We help faculty and staff members to handle situations in which a student's behavior is perceived to be dangerous or disruptive and coordinate emergency services with the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) at University Hospital . Our outreach programs to the campus and larger community include workshops for student groups and a weekly live radio program "Taking Care of Yourself”. We emphasize Mindfulness Meditation training for stress management and academic development, typically providing four or five meditation groups per semester. The UCC trains selected professional students in psychology, psychiatry, social work, and psychiatric nursing who provide counseling services under senior staff supervision. Our psychology internship program has been fully accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1989. The University Counseling Center has been fully accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services since 1988.
