Professional Leadership Awards

Dr. Jerrold Stein earned the NASPA Scott Goodnight Award for Outstanding Performance as a Dean.

Dr. Dallas Bauman received the American College Personnel Association Senior Practitioner Program Award, which acknowledges his extensive and dedicated service and involvement in initiatives to enhance students' development and college experience at Stony Brook and throughout the field of higher education.

Dr. Rick Gatteau has been named as this year's winner of the Bentley Glass/Mortimer Kreuter Award for Excellence in Teaching Within SPD ("the Bentley"). The award recognizes exceptional commitment to the School of Professional Development program through excellence in instruction, and is based upon comments from students.

Beverly Rivera, University Registrar, has been chosen as an excellent representative of a Hispanic Role Model and received an award from the Suffolk County Executive's Hispanic American Advisory Board. The Suffolk County Executive's theme for Hispanic Heritage Month, "Embracing Our Hispanic Role Models," reflects the ongoing dedication and commitment Hispanics make to our economy and community.

Bob Ansbach, Associate Director, Student Health Services, was awarded the School of Health Technology and Management Outstanding Alumni Award of 2008 from the Physician Assistant program on October 17. At the same SHTM ceremony, Kathleen Valerio, CPO Health Educator, was recognized with the 2008 Outstanding Alumna in Health Education Award from Health Care Policy and Management.

The Career Center's Elena Polenova received the 2008 Alva C. Cooper Award for Best Career Development Program from the Metropolitan New York College Career Planning Officers' Association.

The Career Center's Marianna Savoca was named the 2007 Rising Leader of the Year by the NSEE - National Society of Experiential Education.

The Career Center's Kimberly Joy Dixon received a 2008 SBU Campus Life Award from the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

The Career Center's Debbie Fosta received the 2008 200% Award from the SBU Vice President for Student Affairs.

North East Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls Advisor of the Year: Residence Hall Director Melissa Mastrogiovanni.

Professional Organization Leadership Positions

Staff members have been tapped for leadership roles in a variety of professional organizations, increasing Stony Brook University’s profile and reputation on regional and national levels:

Andrea Lipack: Board of Directors of the Metropolitan New York College Career Planning Officers' Association (2005-present)

Karen Clemente: Board of Directors of the National Student Employment Association (2006-2008)

Kimberly Joy Dixon: Board of Directors for the Eastern Association of Colleges & Employers (2006-2008) and has chaired committees (Diversity Advancement, Mentoring).

Marianna Savoca: Board of Directors of SUNY Career Development Organization (2006-2009) and leads employer relations' efforts; Global Initiatives committee for NACE – National Association of Colleges & Employers (2007-2009); Strategic Planning Task Force and co-chairs the Education Abroad Interest Group for the National Society of Experiential Education (2007-2009); Board of Directors for the Eastern Association of Colleges & Employers (2003-2005) and has chaired several committees (Peer Consulting, Mentoring, Diversity Advancement, Sponsorship).

Urszula Zalewski: Advisory Committee of New York Campus Compact and on the Board of Directors of Response of Suffolk County, Inc.

Kathleen Gillon, Assistant Director for Orientation & Family Programs: ACPA College Student Educators International Directorate Board member for the ACPA Commission for Admissions, Orientation, and First-Year Experience (2006-2009)

Matthew Gregory, RHD, was appointed as the Advancement Coordinator for ACPA's standing committee on LGBT concerns.

Programmatic Awards

The Center for Prevention and Outreach CHILL peer education program won the NASPA Silver Medal in the area of Student Health, Wellness, and Counseling (2008). Our CHILL Peer Education Program has been nationally recognized for its contributions in transforming higher education as an outstanding program, being selected to receive NASPA’s 2008 Excellence Silver Award in the area of counseling, health, and wellness.

Academic Advising Certificate Program

EarthStock received the 2007 SUNY Outstanding Student Affairs Program Award in "Emerging Programs" category

SB Amazing Race received the Silver (2nd place) SUNY Outstanding Student Affairs Program Award in "Recreation and Intramurals" category in 2007.

SB's Annual Festival of Lights won second place for SUNY Outstanding Student Affairs Program Award in "Diversity and Multicultural Programs" category in 2007.

This Community Belongs to All of Us / SB Family Feud won the 2007 LICSPA Creative Program of the Year Award and the SBU Presidential Award for Excellence in Team Achievement (2008).

The Corporation for National and Community Service named Stony Brook University to the US President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll With Distinction for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth (2008).

2008 LICSPA Creative Program of the Year awards:

  • Required Orientation Makeup Experience ROME) in the Educational category
  • LEADSTRONG: Student Leadership Conference in the Leadership category
  • Dancing with the SBU Stars in the Social category

Stony Brook University's WUSB/90.1 FM is among mtvU's nominees for best campus radio station this year. MtvU, the music network's college channel, announced nominations for 2008's Woodie Awards, which are voted on by college students.

Career Center and EOP staff received a 2008 President's Award for Team Achievement for their collaborative Career Success Initiatives.

The Career Center was named the 2006-2007 INROADS – New York Educator of the Year

RHA (Residence Hall Association) and NRHH (National Residence Hall Honorary) have won a number of awards at this year's North East Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (NEACURH) conference held March 20-22. The awards include:

  • Top Ten Program: Less "Me" and More "We" by Lauren Potenza and Dhvani Patel (students)
  • National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) Chapter of the Year: Gina M. Vanacore Chapter (SBU)

The Career Center, with our partner SB Corporate Education & Training, received Honorable Mention by the National Association of Colleges & Employers (NACE) for programs created to support workers displaced by the economic crisis.

Grants

CPO was awarded a 3-year grant in the amount of $270,000 from SAMHSA to further its suicide prevention work with the Asian-American/Pacific Islander undergraduate student population.

Center for Prevention & Outreach, in conjunction with CEAS, was awarded a SBU President’s Mini-Grant for "Responding to Students in Distress" (2008).

The Career Center has secured more than $400,000 in grants for community service action: including $300,000+ to fund AmeriCorps community service educational awards for students and $100,000 equivalent in salary and benefits for two VISTA workers.

The Career Center’s 2009 partnership with Corporate Education & Training has yielded grant funding for retraining and career development services for approximately 100 individual displaced workers (career services portion is approximately $15,000).

The Career Center's partnership with CSTEP/AMP yielded grant funding to add sections of CAR 110 & CAR 210 for CSTEP/AMP students in 2007 (approximate value $5,000).

Accreditation

Student Health Service has been awarded a three year term of accreditation with the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc. (AAAHC)
