Required Student Health Insurance Plans

Health insurance not only protects you, but also protects others in your family, as well as those in the community. Health insurance means that individuals can seek early treatment for illness. Health insurance means that individuals who are injured have access to medical care immediately. Students without insurance tend to stay sick longer, placing their family and our University community at risk as well. And, of course, those who are very sick and have huge medical bills that they cannot pay may need to withdraw from school.

For questions about health insurance, contact the Student Health Insurance Office in the west campus Student Health Service, 9:00 am-4:15 pm Monday-Friday by phone (631) 632-6331 or (631)632-6054 or via e-mail.

Required Student Health Insurance (SHIP) for Full-time, Matriculated, Domestic Students

Stony Brook now offers a required health insurance plan for all full-time, matriculated, domestic students. This plan pays for most medically necessary bills, such as doctor visits, mental health counseling, prescriptions, emergency room, lab testing, diagnostic testing, surgery, hospitalization, etc. The plan covers our students everywhere in the world, every day, no matter whether on campus or away.

All full time, matriculated, domestic students at Stony Brook are automatically billed for the University Health Insurance plan at the beginning of each semester upon registration. The cost of the insurance is $959** per year. A charge of $403 will be seen on your Fall 2008 bill, and $553 on the Spring 2009 bill. These fees are lower than last year!

Students who are not citizens of the U.S., and are not permanent U.S. residents will be billed for the International Student Health Insurance Plan (see below).

** Students enrolled in the Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine will be billed an additional amount that covers the required insurance rider for Clinical Practice. For more information about this additional coverage, contact your School or Program Secretary.

Some part time students may also be eligible for SHIP. Please call the SHIP office no later than September 28, 2008 for further information. Dependent spouses and children of insured students may be enrolled by September 28 at higher costs.

Waivers for this insurance plan are given only if the student already has health insurance in effect:

To file a waiver, you must go to the home page of your SOLAR account and look for "Insurance Waivers" under "Student Financial Services" on the menu bar. Waivers for the 2008-2009 academic year will be accepted online July 1 -- September 28 , 2008. If you obtain insurance coverage later during the Fall semester, you must complete a waiver for the Spring semester by February 28, 2009 . If you are a new student in the spring semester, you must complete a waiver by that date . If you are unable to complete the waiver process online, contact the Student Health Insurance Office in the west campus Student Health Center .
