STUDENT MEDIA SERVICES

Who We Are, What We Do

The Office of Student Media Services provides information and services to the Stony Brook campus and surrounding communities through the use of media. The office offers support to the student media in the form of advisement, event planning, educational and media career resources and outreach to the campus community.

The Office of Student Media Services acts as a liaison to the academic departments and schools of Journalism, Theater Arts/Media minor, Music, Cinema and Cultural Studies among others. The Media Minor, the Journalism Major & Minor and the Living Learning Center for Media programs offer a full range of academic coursework and independent project/internship opportunities for interested students.

Stony Brook has three full-service print newspapers, one foreign language print paper, two online student news services, a 24-hour-a-day broadcast FM and webcast radio station, one on-campus broadcast TV station, two student journals and a yearbook. We also work with recognized clubs and organizations that have their own publications and productions.

SBU students can become members of these organizations after being elected and completing training. Opportunities exist for students interested in campus media in administration/management, budget/finances, engineering/technology, reporting, writing, editing and broadcasting.

The office facilitates the awards application process for students for the Campus Buskin Awards, the BEA awards, Folio awards, PCLI awards, AP press awards and other campuswide and regional honors.
