OF-THE-MONTH (OTM) AWARDS

The National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) represents the top 1% of our residential student leaders. Of the Month awards, otherwise known as OTM’s, are one of the means NRHH utilizes to recognize outstanding students, advisors, and programs on the Stony Brook campus. OTM’s are written by students, staff, and faculty of individual schools, assessed on their campus level, and then submitted to the regional and national levels.  We encourage you to participate in this recognition process by submitting either a Program nomination or a General nomination (categories for both are listed below.)

  • Educational Program – While social programs play an important part of building community, educational programs are what helps get important messages out to the community. It is through educational programs that education at Stony Brook goes beyond the classroom.
  • Social Program – Programs that have a social focus are important in helping build community and transition students to a new environment.

  • Advisor – An outstanding advisor is one who creates a supportive environment for the leaders they work with and are instrumental in helping the leaders they work with grow, learn, and develop.

  • Community – This award is designed to recognize the contributions of residential and working communities and the impact they have on their students and the rest of campus. Since a community is difficult to define, any residential life community is eligible for this award. For example: wings, halls, floors, complexes, executive boards, RA staffs, etc. Residence life organizations may not be nominated for this award.

  • Executive Board Member – This can be an executive member of any club or organization. Make sure you include some of the responsibilities of the position so the reader will know how they truly went above and beyond. Be sure to briefly include other activities the student is involved in. This shows that they are a well rounded leader and able to perform well in their position and still participate in other activities.

  • Organization - Sometimes, it is not only an individual but an entire group of people—those who make up an organization—who make outstanding contributions to the community and student life within a given month. This award is meant to recognize amazing student clubs, groups, and organizations on campus.

  • Resident Assistant – New and creative approaches to the position show a true dedication to helping students. Outstanding Resident Assistants have contributed to their floor/building community and offer creative programming opportunities.

  • Spotlight – This award is intended to recognize outstanding individuals who don't fit into any set category, such as residential life staff members, Graduate Assistants, Food Service Personnel, night security etc. These individuals have made a significant impact on an individual or a community. Note: The nominee cannot be an advisor, executive board member, resident assistant, or student.

  • Student – This category is intended for a student leader who puts forth special effort during the month of nomination. Possible things to include in the nomination could be leadership development, contribution to the people in her/his community, and his/her activities. Please note that RHA executive board members, advisors, and residential assistants are not eligible for this award.

  • Custodial/Maintenance- There are many members of our community and campus who work hard every day to insure that our campus and residence halls are clean and functioning smoothly. This category is meant to thank those individuals who are often not thanked enough. Note: This can not be entered for the regional or national level; however, it will be recognized at the campus level.

  • Bulletin Board- Bulletin Boards are everywhere, and a well done, creative bulletin board often makes all the difference in informing residents and making them excited about events. This award is meant to recognize outstanding bulletin boards and the people who dedicate their precious time to creating them. Note: This can not be entered for the regional or national level; however, it will be recognized at the campus level.

  • Office/ Hall Assistant – Although often unnoticed, it can be the office assistant who helps our RHDs and quad offices run more efficiently and better serve our residents. These individuals have gone above and beyond in customer service and/or have shown an exceptional commitment to their job. Note: This can not be entered for the regional or national level; however, it will be recognized at the campus level.

  • Senior Staff- There are senior staff members who are working hard every day, often behind the scenes, to insure that everything on campus is running smoothly. Often, few people know about their efforts and their accomplishments. This OTM is meant to recognize these individuals. Note: This can not be entered for the regional or national level; however, it will be recognized at the campus level.

  • First Year Experience – This category recognizes student leaders who have lived in the residence halls for less than a year and who have contributed significantly to their community. Any undergraduate student who has lived in the residence halls for less than one year—whether that individual is a transfer or freshman student—is eligible for this award.

  • Faculty/Staff- Faculty members are a very crucial part of the college experience as they assist students inside and outside of the classroom. This category is used for professors, instructors, teaching assistants, counselors and other academic affairs staff. This category excludes hall directors, residence life coordinators (or equivalents), and other housing personnel that would be submitted under the spotlight category.
