Sportsmanship Rating
A part of the philosophy of the Intramural Program is that good sportsmanship is vital to the conduct of every contest. In order to encourage proper conduct before, during and after a scheduled contest, the Department of Campus Recreation has developed a rating system. The rating system is as follows:
In order for a team to qualify for the post season playoffs, they must have a "B" average sportsmanship rating during the regular season round robin league play.
Sportsmanship Rating will be based on the following criteria:
- An "A" (4 points) will be awarded to a team that demonstrates extremely good sportsmanship and maintains an attitude of complete cooperation.
- A "B" (3 points) will be awarded to a team if there are no incidents of poor sportsmanship.
-
A "C" (2 points) will be awarded to a team when unsportsmanlike conduct is not present in the game except for rare minor infractions. A team may not receive this score or lower depending on the sport unless it receives:
- A yellow card in volleyball or soccer.
- A technical foul in basketball.
- An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in flag football, wiffleball, or dodgeball.
- A verbal warning issued by the umpire in softball.
-
A "D" (1 point) will be awarded to a team:
- When a player or a coach is ejected for abusive remarks.
- If players, other than the captain, persist in questioning the officials or if any player repeatedly argues with an official.
- If spectators, clearly related to the team, fail to cooperate with the officials.
-
An "E" (0 points) will be awarded to a team:
- If a player or coach is ejected for striking or shoving an official, opponent or spectator.
- If a player(s) is (are) so antagonistic to an official that the game cannot be played with proper order and control.
- If a player(s) disregard(s) warnings of unnecessary roughness.
A team that receives an "E" rating must have their captain meet with the Director the following day to be eligible to play in their next scheduled contest.
Teams must adhere to the sportsmanship regulations by obtaining a "B" (3.0 average) in the regular season to qualify for playoffs. If a team's sportsmanship average drops below the "B" average during playoff competition, the match will automatically be forfeited and the other team will be given the win. Also, if a team receives two "D" ratings during playoff competition they will be dropped from play regardless of their sportsmanship rating average. The Department of Campus Recreation reserves the right to drop any team and/or individual from playoff competition for sportsmanship violations regardless of that team's sportsmanship average.
Special Contest Situations
- Contests that are not rescheduled due to facility problems, etc.; both teams will receive a "No Rating" (NR).
- A team that defaults on the day of the contest will receive an NR.
- A team winning a contest by forfeit will receive an NR.
- A team losing a contest by forfeit will receive an NR.
- If a game is cancelled before the start of the second half, both teams will receive a sportsmanship rating.
Any player who is ejected, for any reason, will not be eligible to participate in his/her team's next scheduled contest. Based upon the ejected players' actions, further disciplinary procedures may be taken. These decisions are final. Any player or team ejected from a contest will be automatically suspended from the following game and must meet with the Director.
The following are considered to be evidence of unsportsmanlike conduct: profanity, unnecessary delay of game, striking, shoving, or threatening an opponent, official or teammate, arguing with officials, derogatory and abusive remarks toward an opponent, official or teammate, and any action with the intent to physically injure an opponent.
Consumption of alcoholic beverages by coaches, active players, bench players and spectators is prohibited. Violators are subject to disciplinary action. Intramural participants may be ejected from a game and suspended from further participation. All teams are responsible for their spectators. Any unsportsmanlike conduct from spectators will be penalized against the team they are supporting.
