Can I pick my own roommate?
In most instances, a G/RA applicant may be able to select a roommate during the annual Room Selection process (as long as all paperwork is submitted by the due date indicating the preferred roommate, the preferred roommate is a current student that is eligible to live on campus and/or in the specific building the G/RA is placed in, both the G/RA and the roommate’s university bill is cleared and the preferred roommate has paid their housing deposit.) If the housing selection process has past, unfortunately, we may not be able to offer you the ability to select a roommate.
What if I find that the G/RA position is not for me?
Although we try to examine a potential applicant’s fit for the position as accurately as possible, there may be cases where a current G/RA finds their goals and expectations at odds with the position’s goals and expectations. In such an event that G/RA should discuss this issue with their supervisor and they will decide what the best subsequent course of action is.
What benefits do you gain from becoming a G/RA?
Suffice it to say that there are many diverse benefits gained from being a G/RA. Some of these include marketable professional skills such as communication, project and team management, academic and social peer advising, etc. Other more tangible benefits include priority class registration, housing cost waiver, partial meal plan cost waiver, bookstore/campus cash credit, staff shirts, third party discounts, etc.
I would like to apply for the G/RA position but I am married and/or have children. Can I still apply?
Yes. Any student at Stony Brook, regardless of their marital/parental status, is eligible to apply for the G/RA position. Should you be selected, you would be placed in family housing that coincides with your particular situation.
