Miscellaneous

  • Will the RA/GRA compensation affect my financial aid?
*Yes. Most types of financial aid are based on calculations associated with the cost of attending the institution (e.g. FAFSA's Expected Family Contribution). As part of the compensation package, RAs/GRAs are awarded a full room cost waiver and a partial meal plan cost waiver. This compensation affects the final cost of attending the institution and as such will affect the amount of financial aid awarded.
  • How can I get more information on writing a resume?
*Consult with the professionals at the Career Center. Please visit their office and/or website (http://www.career.sunysb.edu/ ) for additional information.
  • What if I'm offered a position in the building I don't want to be in?
*Unfortunately, we cannot offer you the choice. If you don't want to reside within the building listed on your offer letter, you can decline the position. Keep in mind; if you choose to decline your offer then your application is removed from the waiting pool.
  • I'm not comfortable with confrontation; do you get trained for that?
*Yes. RA/GRA training will aid you in developing your communication skills as well as many other interpersonal skill sets.
  • Can I pick what building I want to be placed into?
*No. As a policy, we cannot accommodate all individual preferences for placement. This is because we assign placement according to factors that include interview performance, applicant Undergraduate College affiliation, current or future position vacancies, etc.
  • Can I pick my own roommate?
*In most instances, a RA/GRA applicant may be able to select a roommate during the annual Room Selection process given roommate eligibility and deadline requirements have been met.
  • I would like to apply for the RA/GRA position but I am married and/or have children. Can I still apply?
*Yes. Any student at Stony Brook, regardless of their marital/parental status, is eligible to apply for the RA/GRA position. Should you be selected, you would be placed in family housing that coincides with your particular situation.
