How can I apply for a room change if I'm not happy with the room to which I'm assigned?

During the first two weeks of the semester, there is a room freeze that allows time for the residential staff to confirm where all residents live and to identify vacancies, if any exist. After the room freeze ends, a student not assigned to temporary housing (i.e. temporary triple) who wishes to make a room change must contact their quad office to make arrangements to switch rooms.

Freshmen interested in changing rooms are limited to spaces within their assigned Undergraduate Colleges. Nearly every room change during the fall semester will be a one-to-one exchange with another resident, due to the fact that the fall semester typically starts with residents in provisional triples.

Room swaps must be to like-type rooms (residential double to residential double, residential single to residential single, West single to West single, West double to West double). Changes from double to singles or residence halls to West will only be granted once you are reached off the waitlist. You may add your name to the waitlist at http://studentaffairs.stonybrook.edu/res/housing_app.shtml under "housing applications."

I recently added my name to the waitlist for a single. My roommate and I are not compatible, and I would like to know how soon I can get a single room.

There are only about 450 single rooms in the residence halls and the waiting list is almost equally as long. Priority for single rooms goes to students with a documented need of a single room for medical reasons. Any remaining singles are assigned using the existing waiting list.

Roommates having difficulties may benefit from discussing their issues with their RHD. Your RHD will help you mediate, and negotiate a roommate contract, if needed.

Campus Residences will make every effort to meet the medical needs of students who demonstrate a need for a single room. Every residential community does have a small number of ADA accessible rooms for students who utilize wheelchairs. A student who believes that s/he needs a single room for medical reasons must contact Disability Support Services at 631-632-6748. S/he will meet with the student to discuss his/her specific needs, and if appropriate, s/he will make a referral to the Division of Campus Residences.
