FAQ

What is LGBTQ*?

The letters stand for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning. The asterisk (*) functions as a wildcard similarly to how internet search engines use the asterisk. The reason for including this "wildcard" is that there are endless identities and words that people use to describe their identities. The "wildcard" serves to include any and all identities that people use to describe their sexuality, gender identity, and/or expression as something that is outside of what society typically assumes or assigns.

What is sexual orientation?

Sexual orientation describes a person's attraction toward other people. Typically it is assumed that individuals have a heterosexual or "straight" sexual orientation but there are many other sexual orientations that include (but not limited to) gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, queer, etc.

What is gender identity?

Gender identity is a person's internal sense of their own gender. One's gender identity may or may not align with what society typically associates with the gender the person was assigned at birth.
