Mission

The mission of the Student Ambassador Program is to provide Stony Brook University with student leaders who participate in an  official capacity at special events throughout the year. This program, which brings together students from various academic disciplines and cultural backgrounds, serves to enrich and enhance  leadership and communication skills, personal growth, and professional development for its membership while creating long lasting ties with their future alma mater.

Criteria for Membership

  • Academic achievement - 3.0 minimum GPA and full time student status
  • A minimum of one semester completed at Stony Brook University
  • At least one academic year remaining to serve as an Ambassador
  • Community Service
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Enthusiastic and  positive personality
  • A sincere desire to represent Stony Brook University
  • The ability to work well with others and to be a successful team player
  • An effective speaker
  • Keen knowledge of the University

Selection Process

Students are nominated by faculty and staff members of the University. A formal complete application form is then submitted by the nominee to the program advisors. If approved, the student is then scheduled for an interview with the selection committee. This committee is composed of University faculty, administrators, and current Student Ambassadors.

Commitment

  • Required attendance at the full-day Fall Training Session and Spring meeting
  • Participation in a minimum of 5 events per semester
  • Student Ambassador attire is to be worn at all assignments
  • Demonstration of high standard of professionalism at all times

Ethical Standards

Student Ambassadors are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic honesty and responsible behavior required by the University.

In the case of a change in a Student Ambassador's academic or behavioral status, it is expected that the student will immediately  discuss this issue with the program advisors. Following this consultation, appropriate actions will be taken in accordance with standards of conduct required by the program.

This action could include termination of the student's participation in the Student Ambassador program.
